Kumihimo is an ancient Japanese braiding technique which involves 8, 16, or more strands of fiber which are braided while being suspended from a frame or plate. Dr. Joshua Holden, Professor of Mathematics from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, will instruct the class how to make a simple 16-strand Kumihimo braid and also explore its surprising mathematical symmetries. By the end of the session, students will have a colorful and unusual key chain to take home. No prior knowledge is necessary; Dr. Holden will provide all materials and teach students to master the ancient art of Japanese Kumihimo.
