Exploring Antarctica: Endurance
With Elmer Guerri, Lifelong Learner

Date: Mondays, October 24 & 31 and November 7, 2022
Time: 2 - 4:30 PM
Place: ISU, Chestnut Building Room 107 (CHANGED FORM PRINTED PROGRAM GUIDE)
Cost: $15

The first two parts of the OLLI three-part class on Antarctica, the frozen continent, will allow participants to participate in the solution of one of history’s most famous maritime mysteries, namely, “What happened to the proud Endurance, the flagship of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s ill-fated 1915 Trans-Antarctic Expedition?”. Using modern archaeological remote underwater technology the sunken ship was recently discovered in Antarctica’s Weddell Sea beneath 9,842 feet of water, where it has rested since 1915. That discovery will unravel in real-time film before the eyes of participants. Participants will read Alfred Lansing’s 1959 classical account ENDURANCE, SHACKLETON’S INCREDIBLE VOYAGE, and they will view the 2001 film “Shackleton’s Antarctic
Adventure.” They will review the chronology of Antarctic exploration by such notables as Byrd, Captain James Cook, Captain John Davis, James Clark Ross, Robert-Falcon-Scott and others. They will examine the 15 greatest mysteries of Antarctica, and they will experience sightseeing from drones as well as from ships sailing in ice-infested seas.

The third part of OLLI’s three-part class on Antarctica will allow participants to enjoy a vicarious visit to Antarctica through the eyes of members of Terre Haute’s own Joseph Lugar, Jr. and Robyn Lugar family who visited the frozen continent during a two-week excursion in December 2021 with the Albatros Expeditions group. “For me, it’s just the beauty of the land”, exclaimed Robyn Lugar, who shared the excitement with her husband and their three children. The Lugar’s will share beautiful color images of elephant seals, Gentoo penguins (some just minutes old), iceberg floats in the Southern Ocean, and a large variety of birds and whales. The Lugars have visited all seven continents, and they have all been involved in educational endeavors and community service projects in Terre Haute. Joseph is a pharmacist and consultant and he has lectured on topics of psychology and pharmacy at ISU in the past. Mother Robyn directs the Bachelor of Social Work degree program at ISU. Daughter, Katie, works as Assistant Director of Student Programming and Leadership for the Honors College at ISU.
