From Colonial times until today, workers have spoken out against dangerous working condi-tions and substandard wages through protests of all kinds from individual demonstrations against a single issue to general strikes which, in closing down all businesses in a city or state or even the nation, pit the striking workers against the entire government. In whatever form, these worker-driven actions have brought to light the hardships of work and have led to major advances in the lives of all people in the United States who benefit by a healthier, safer, more productive work environment. Each of the sessions will highlight a specific incident in Ameri-can history when workers made their voices heard and will extract lessons for our understand-ing of the social justice progress that resulted from their efforts. Held at the Debs House, the four classes will focus on the following significant examples of the power of protests.

September 8. Workers’ Solidarity: The Terre Haute General Strike of 1935
September 22. Organizing a Community: Local 22 of the Food, Tobacco and Agricultural Workers
October 6. “Si, Se Puede”: Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers’ Grape Boycott
October 20. Culture and Values: Standing up for a Union at Starbucks
