Public art serves at least three purposes: to commemorate or memorialize important events, to honor culturally important people or groups, and to enhance quality of life by entertaining and enriching. In this class, we will view examples of public art from Terre Haute and around the world to see how art builds societies. Art makes cultural expression coherent, facilitates com-munication, and honor events and people who have lasting cultural influence on their neigh-bors, nations, and the world. Patricia McIntyre, Ph.D., is an Art Historian and is current presi-dent of the Alliance of the Swope Art Museum.
