This class provides participants the opportunity to test their knowledge of popular American authors in a “Jeopardy-Like” format. In preparation for the class, participants will prepare lists of two or three favorite novels and favorite American authors. Those lists will be tabulated and shared with participants prior to class in an effort to get participants thinking about popular au-thors from each of 3 genres. The three genres include American History, World War One, and South Seas Islands.
During the class, participants will be presented synopses for each of three novels from the three genres, as well as biographical information for each author. The presenter will cover spe-cific portions of text from each novel, portions that have been selected to correspond with the elements of style of well-known popular American authors. A brief Q & A period will follow the overviews, then participants will meet in separate break-out discussion sessions, each with an OLLI member facilitator who has been made aware of the author and book titles. The groups will reassemble as a class and discuss their choices as to whom the authors for each of the novels might be by saying , “Who is__________?”.
Once their decisions have been announced and discussed, the presenter will reveal the author and title of each of the three books. Participants will be recommended to read the three novels on their own following the class, which is optional. On-line sources and used book sources will be identified for each title.
