The purpose of this course is to provide participants with an introduction to Latin American Political Economy (LAPE). The emphasis is on political economy based on the belief that an understanding of the complex reality of the region cannot be grasped by the application of economic principles alone. An adequate understanding of the region requires that we study it along multiple dimensions including its history, geography, culture, and sociology besides its economics and politics. The course will include a focus on Paraguay. Para-guay is a fascinating but often overlooked case study of LAPE. Located in the heart of South America Paraguay has historically strong relations with the United States but practically no relations at all with China.
