Romeo and Juliet. Hazel Grace and Augustus. Antony and Cleopatra. Hermione and Ron. Ennis and Jack. Catherine and Heathcliff. George and Martha. Princess Buttercup and Wesley. Rhett and Scarlett. Literature of all ages—and for all ages—highlights the complex relationships of memorable couples. Yet Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice is richer than most, introducing readers to six memorable couples: Mrs. and Mr. Bennet, Mrs. and Mr. Gardiner, Charlotte and Mr. Collins, Lydia and Mr. Wickham, Jane and Mr. Bingley, and, of course, Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy. This three-session class will explore Austen’s artful presentation of these relationships with sometimes comic,
sometimes serious, sometimes satiric, but always engaging style. First published in 1813, Pride and
Prejudice is a much-loved novel that has never been out of print; we’ll discover why.
February 9, chapters 1–23; February 14, chapters 24–45; February 16, chapters 46–61.
The book is widely available, in multiple forms and formats; any version will do.
