With Dr. Michella M. Marino, Deputy Director of the Indiana Historical Bureau, Division of the Indiana State Library
Date: Friday, January 20, 2023
Time: 2:00 - 4:00 PM
Place: Chestnut Building, Room 107
Cost: $5
In this presentation, Dr. Marino explores the long history of Roller Derby as it skated a thin line between sport and spectacle from its inception in 1935 to the present. She highlights Roller Derby's connections to the Hoosier state, the fascinating gender dynamics of the co-ed sport, and its progressive inclusion of mothers and promotion of motherhood. Roller Derby, while both beloved and spurned for its hard hits, edgy attitude, and fast-paced action, offers insight to and lessons about American sporting culture.
Dr. Michella Marino grew up in Morristown, Indiana, in Shelby County. She graduated with her B.A. from Hanover College, M.A. from the University of Louisville, and Ph.D. in American History from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She is the Deputy Director of the Indiana Historical Bureau, a Division of the Indiana State Library. She resides in Indianapolis with her husband, a high school history teacher, her eight-year-old son, and a super onery dog named Greta. Dr. Marino is not only a historian but also a former roller derby skater.
