Japan is widely permissive of alcohol consumption and drunkenness. Simultaneously, narcotic use is met with severe stigma and harsh punishments. Together these opposing views create a society that is antagonistic in its perception and treatment of those trying to stop using and live recovery. The result is a place where self-identified addicts struggle to make their lives fit the dictates of recovery programs imported outside Japan while fearful of being labeled and treated as a stigmatized figure. Such a situation is also the opposite of the message put forward by recovery
groups, leaving Japan's addicts in an impossible situation as they work to manage their condition in a society that does not recognize it validity.
