F. Scott Fizgerald’s 1925 novel The Great Gatsby is widely considered a literary masterpiece and is a contender for the title of Great American Novel. What has made this novel endure in the American imagination all these years? Why has it been adapted for two Hollywood movies, a Broadway musical, and an animated film? Join Rose-Hulman Professor of American Literature Dr. Caroline Carvill for this course and uncover the answer to the question “What Makes Gatsby Great?”. Students must supply their own copy of the novel and should read Chapter 1 (24 pages) prior to the first class and the entire novel (180 pages) prior to the 2nd class.
