Understanding Crows: Urban Winter Roost & Annual Cycle
With Dr. Peter Scott

Date: Thursday, June 20
Time: 1:00—3:00 p.m.
Place: ISU Cunningham Memorial Library
Room 028
Cost: $5

For 30 winters, Terre Haute has “hosted” one of the largest crow roosts in Indiana–30,000 birds! Why did the crows shift from rural to urban sites for winter roosting? What features of Terre Haute make this an attractive destination for a large roost? Where do wintering birds come from? Join retired ISU professor, Dr. Peter Scott, as he answers these questions, explains why large urban area roosts are a phenomenon across North America, and learn about the interesting seasonal social biology of crows, their alternation with several months of “nuclear family” life, and why there is a ritual of late afternoon gathering in staging areas, followed by a dramatic, massive dusk flight to roost locations.

Fee: $5.00
