Join veteran OLLI instructor Elmer Guerri for an engaging class exploring Nikos Kazantzakis's classic novel Zorba the Greek, published in 1946 and adapted into a 1964 film and a 1983 Broadway play, both starring Anthony Quinn. The story follows Zorba, a passionate Greek worker, and "The Boss," his introspective companion, as they navigate life and its complexities in Crete. This course will delve into Zorba's vibrant philosophy, urging us to approach life with fresh eyes and embrace each day fully. The class analyzes themes of love, faith, and tragedy, views the entire 1964 film, and discusses the symbolism in the Broadway musical’s lyrics. Participants will also enjoy an in-depth interview with director Michalis Cacoyannis. Come ready to dance Zorba’s sirtaki and share in the joy of this unforgettable journey! Students must provide their own copy of the Peter Bien translation of Zorba the Greek.
