Amy MacLennan, Curator of the Swope Art Museum, will give a guided tour of the four galleries of work by artist Stanley Lewis and speak about his process and intentions. Stanley Lewis is a figurative painter, which means he paints objects in environments that are recognizable.Like many figurative painters, Lewis understands that it is in the abstractions that the structure and movements in a painting are conceived, and he may work for years on a painting or drawing attempting to grasp the essential relationships that drive movement and create a sense of spatial depth. The result is a painting that brings attention to the materiality of the paint and other materials while simultaneously communicating the complexity of his subject.
