Most people associate international law with the nation state system that came into being in 1648, but treaties, pacts, and rules for diplomacy have long been negotiated between empires. The codification of international law that began with the League of Nations following World War I has been expanding its jurisdiction into social, economic, and criminal arenas to meet the needs of global crises since the formation of the United Nations. This course covers the structures, activities, and trials of that body and looks into the future of international law and the elements that show the most promise of creating world order.
