Examine addiction through a phenomenological lens. This course explores how substances and behaviors become a “drug of choice,” the personal and cultural significance they carry, and the ways addiction is shaped by social narratives and expectations. Attention is given to identity, stigma, and the language used to describe dependency and recovery. The complex relationship between the individual and society is considered, including models of treatment, rehabilitation, and reintegration. Drawing from philosophy, psychology, and the social sciences, the session reflects on how addiction is understood, experienced, and addressed within contemporary communities and systems of care and public policy
