The Wabash & Erie Canal, once the world’s longest canal, connected Lake Erie at Toledo to the Ohio River at Evansville and ran through Vigo County. Construction of the Cross-Cut section from Terre Haute to Worthington was completed in 1850, establishing Terre Haute as the canal’s nadir level between the Fort Wayne and Riley summits. This two-part program opens with an illustrated overview of the local canal route, with special attention to Riley and Lock 47, followed by a guided tour of Lock 47 Park. OLLI members Sam and Jo Ligget, retired Vigo County math teachers and Canal Society of Indiana board members, share lifelong connections to these historic sites
