Just in time for Mardi Gras, Dr. Colleen Haas, professor of African and African American Studies at ISU, explores
the vibrant traditions of Afro-Brazilian carnival music. This three-session course begins with the sacred roots of
carnival, examining how Afro-Brazilian religion influenced early celebrations in Brazil. The second class contrasts
regional styles, highlighting the distinctive music of Rio de Janeiro and Pernambuco. The final session turns to
the twentieth century, focusing on Salvador, Bahia, where evolving musical practices shaped modern carnival.
Participants gain cultural, historical, and musical insight into one of the world’s most dynamic artistic traditions.
