Rebellion has been a constant expression of political violence in history, and nowhere more than within the population of Russia from its inception as an empire to the overthrow of the Tsar in 1917. This class will probe the structure of society that reveals the origin of discontent and the dynamics, organization, and resolution of the conflict. Key events of specific rebellions will be placed in the context of world history to increase the understanding of the details of revolt and to sharpen the analysis of this consistent phenomenon.
