Dr. Barbara Skinner, Professor of History at Indiana State University, leads this two-part lecture series exploring the deep historical roots behind Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine. From the rise of the first Slavic state in the 10th century to modern geopolitics, the sessions trace how centuries of cultural, political, and ideological divergence shaped today’s conflict. Discussion will examine the complex relationship between Russians and Ukrainians, shifting attitudes toward Western influence, and the evolution of power under Russian and Soviet rule. The program concludes with an analysis of President Vladimir Putin’s motivations and the enduring historical narratives driving his actions
