Examine the psychology behind terrorism and insurgency in this thought-provoking course led by Dr. David Polizzi of Indiana State University’s School of Criminology & Security Studies. Taking a multidisciplinary approach, the class explores how individual and group meaning shape terrorist behavior through the theories of Martin Heidegger and Roger Griffin. Study the blurred boundaries between terrorism and insurgency with examples from al-Qaeda, the Islamic State, and white supremacist movements. Learn how religious and secular ideologies fuel violence, how “innovation” influences extremist narratives, and how perceived existential threats impact the human psyche.
