Explore the aubade in this creative writing session. A poem of both beginnings and endings, of longing and leave-taking, and of time and timelessness, the poetic aubade is a complex and alluring approach to the love poem. Students will read and discuss several examples of the aubade from a diverse range of contemporary poets including Traci Brimhall, Aimee Nezhukumatathil, and Ocean Vuong. Building from this craft discussion, we will write our own poem in a guided activity, drawing on the inherent tensions and abundant possibilities the aubade offers. No prior experience with poetry is necessary.
