At the same time that Galileo, Copernicus, Kepler, and Brahe were revealing the scientific underpinnings of the cosmos, highly respected magistrates, clergy, intellectuals, and townspeople were lighting thousands of witch-pyres across Europe. How could the beginning of “modernity” and the Great Witch Hunt coexist? Just in time for Halloween, explore this paradox with ISU History Professor Dr. Steve Stofferahn as he examines period folklore, treatises, imagery, and historical context and asks what our culture’s continued fascination with witches, wizards, and magic might tell us about our own society.
