Beginning with the ShostakovichFestive Overture, the THSO opens its exploration of heroism and hope with a bang before moving on to Brahms’ glorious Symphony No. 3. Written in the picturesque town of Wiesbaden on the Rhine River, this hidden gem is an odd mix of heroism, formal rigor, and emotional depth that incorporates Brahms’ personal motto, “Frei aber froh” (Free but happy). The THSO concludes the program with the Shostakovich Symphony No. 5, a searing search for hope in a time of darkness and oppression written during Stalin’s Great Terror Campaign.
