From antiquity to the present, the sea has been both a fictional and real force in shaping life on Earth. It has been revered as the source of everything and feared as a danger to all. This course seeks to explore the mystery of the sea’s origin story, to record its role in the rise of powerful empires, and to listen to its cry for help. The four sessions include Ocean Imagination in Antiquity from Biblical to Naval history of Japan; The Sea as the Mother of Empire, including the South China Sea and Containerships; Ocean Piracy in Service of the State touching on the Jewish Pirates of the Caribbean and the Meaning of Treasure Island; and Islands against a Turbulent Sea, delving into the tempestuous life of the ocean and the literal meaning of Sea Change
